There’s a cheerleader vibe to “The Magic Clap,” the first single from the Coup’s sixth album, Sorry to Bother You, and the band (led by co-producer Damion Gallegos) strays far outside the currently accepted notion of hip-hop.

Rolling Stone Magazine

My first concert was a Day On The Green -Journey/ Montrose/ Santana/ Toto…oakland …i walked to bart in union city from 7 hills by myself…i met up w/ my friend Darin Woods in the front of the line and we were the first ones to be let in as we ran to the front in my first “concert” i remember the the wood on the ground up in front of the stage as we made camp and the loud volume of the music was quite overwhelming…i was in the 7-8th grade at the time and stoned out of my mind…rosanna by toto was the shit!!! also the entire side one of “Journey Escape” changed me 4 ever…”been a mystery…still i try to see…why something good can hurt so bad…” after that making out to this was on a higher level of understanding.

For their latest Riley and company teamed with co-producer Damion Gallegos at Chub Studio in Oakland. The album features guest appearances by Anti-Flag, Das Racist, Killer Mike, Japanther, Jolie Holland, Vernon Reid, and Joe Henry among others. Sorry To Bother You was recently included in Spin Magazine’s recent “25 Fall Albums You Gotta Hear” list, where they described it as “a hip-hop broadside at its core, but also integrates aggro punk guitar and danceable, ’80-influenced beats.”
